Look, we can’t blame you for missing some of self-titled‘s finest magazine features from the past year. Digging through our digital issues takes some dedication, which is why we went ahead and selected 20 standout stories from 2011, from Anika discussing modern art at MoMA and exclusive interviews with Zomby and Charlotte Gainsbourg to pieces about bourbon, Nine Inch Nails, whiskey, stage outfit sketches, gospel, minimalism, personal record collections, and the power of the riff.

LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Mister Heavenly, ‘Out of Love’

The Artist/Album: Mister Heavenly, Out of Love (Sub Pop, 2011)

The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: As progressively poppy as Man Man’s gotten with every passing record, their wild-eyed frontman—a Rhodes-smacking, stage-prowling Ryan Kattner—has never embraced his Top 40 tendencies as freely as he does on Mister Heavenly’s debut album. Well, maybe not today’s Top 40; more like the long-lost decades suggested by the trio’s “doom-wop” sound, as co-piloted by Joe Plummer’s raggedy drum rolls and the slightly less manic melodies of Nick Thornburn (see: the lengthy interview below). This is soda shop pop spiked with vials of strychnine, right down to its surreal references to reggae pie and doe-like Diddy eyes.

SXSW 2011: Ten Acts We’ll Still Be Talking About Six Months Later, Including Dirty Beaches, Austra, and Yelawolf’s Tattooed Torso

JEFF the Brotherhood

Words and Photos by Aaron Richter

I’d like to preface self-titled‘s South By Southwest wrap-up with a disclaimer. I made a simple rule this year: to follow my own tastes—strictly want-to-sees, no supposed-to-sees. Some of these happened to coincide with mass quantities of beer, but that’s besides the point. Here are 10 artists I’m actually looking forward to hearing more from this year…

SELF-TITLED TV: Michael Cera and Members of Man Man, Islands and Modest Mouse Cover The Misfits

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

If there’s one thing we’ve always loved about New York, it’s the city’s tendency—Gawker, notwithstanding—to give celebrities the no-big-deal treatment. Case in point: the blank stares that followed a few cheers when Michael Cera stepped to the right side of Bowery Ballroom’s stage last night, assuming the live bassist position he continues to hold in Mister Heavenly.

Which is appropriate, because the Sub Pop-endorsed side project isn’t about him; it’s about the alchemy of two very different voices—Man Man‘s Honus Honus, and Islands’ Nick Thorburn. Unlike the latter’s Human Highway album with Jim Guthrie, Mister Heavenly isn’t a smooth Simon & Garfunkel affair. It’s an oil and vinegar mix that actually works, a rare instance where sandpaper-lined melodies sound great brushed up against clean, gold-plated harmonies.

Since the trio (rounded out by Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer) won’t be releasing a proper record until later this year, the following video is all we’ve got for now. It’s a Misfits cover, too, so let’s just say that Mister Heavenly’s own material is a bit more restrained…

1MM: A Roundup of Recent Live Photos, Including Man Or Astroman?, Neon Indian and Immortal

Like most of you, we can’t keep our minds locked on one particular thing for more than, oh, five minutes. As a result, we forget to post photos and stories from time to time. Here’s a set of recent live shots that fall into that category, starting with the South By Southwest reunion of Man Or Astro-Man?

1MM: Man Man Brings Rubber Snakes, Exploding Feathers and Avant Circus Act to East River Park

[Photos by Andrew Parks; slideshow available here]

In case you plan on attending any of this summer’s remaining East River Park shows, know this: the main bandshell is not along the water in Brooklyn, ala JellyNYC’s Pool Party series. It’s at least a 15-minute walk from the closest subway stop (the F train at Delancey and Essex). Which is all right with us; self-titled‘s typical work day involves sitting in front of a computer for 12 hours at a time, so we appreciated the exercise and yet another one of Man Man‘s splendid summer carnival sets. While this one wasn’t as ridiculously packed as their Pool Party appearance a few years back, it did reel in a number of the band’s hardcore fans, most of which appear to be under the age of 16.

Thanks for making us feel old, guys. Lots more photos after the jump…
