It contains 4 tracks mixed into one long 45min piece. Based mostly on recordings + unused recordings from the parent album, Owl Splinters.

While most people treat our Primer pieces as basic guides to a genre or fellow artist, Deaf Center‘s Otto Totland basically said “fuck all that noise” and filed fact sheets, sample sources, and the reasoning behind the names of the Norwegian duo’s key records. Frankly, it’s a little strange. And that’s fine—we wouldn’t expect any less from the guy who’s responsible for pouring rays of light into the cloudy soundscapes of Deaf Center’s other half, Erik K. Skodvin (see also: the imaginary horror scores of Svarte Greiner).
If you like what you read/hear below and live in the New York area, be sure to check out the pair’s rare stateside set at the Judson Memorial Church on Thursday night, as they set the stage for an Unsound presentation of “Beyond the Dark” with the Sinfonietta Cracovia Orchestra and the melancholic classical music of Henryk Górecki.

One of our favorite, and most popular, Needle Exchange mixes in recent memory was a bleak but strangely beautiful ambient entry from Erik K. Skodvin, better known as one-half of Deaf Center and the guy behind Miasmah Recordings and Svarte Greiner. Skodvin will don that very guise at Brooklyn’s BAM Rose Cinemas next Monday night, as the multi-instrumentalist performs a live Nosferatu score alongside percussionist Paul Wirkus. In related Unsound Festival news, he’ll also appear with Deaf Center at the Judson Memorial Church next Thursday, as the pair sets the stage for the music of Polish composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.
With that in mind, we asked the Norwegian noisemaker to discuss five of his favorite horror films, from the black comedy of Evil Dead II to the “true undefinable horror” of a sorely overlooked David Lynch series. Be sure to scroll down for streaming versions of two Svarte Greiner albums…

Although initially asked to do a dark ambient mix, I feel there’s way too much interesting music I want to share to narrow it down that much. I guess “Entrance Shot” is still a fairly dark mix, but I tried adding some different things I’ve really liked lately, with a couple of older additions.
And since I’ve changed Miasmah‘s release schedule around quite a bit since last year, it’s a good chance to preview some of the really great upcoming stuff we have in the first half of the year. First, there’s the recently released Juv album—recorded between 1996-98 and left unfinished for 14 years ’cause of personal conflict. Are [Mokkelbost] started going through the duo’s DATs last year and found out there was so much good material in there for it to finally get a release. On top of that, I have albums by two very unique Belgian artists who happen to play in the same live show together (mainly the Kreng/Abattoir Férme show). I’m very excited about these, which are both very hard to describe (Kaboom Karavan, Kreng).
I also had the pleasure of seeing live peformances by Aun (Montreal) and Andy Moor & Yannis Kyriakides (Rome) last year while on tour, which led to my discovery of their amazing music. Finally, I want to mention hearing Luciano Cilio while in a record shop in Oslo about 3-4 years ago. Luciano died at age 33 (1984) after completing the album this track is from, which ended up beeing his only recorded release, later reissued on Die Schachtel in 2004. Big recommendation!

It’s been a while since Ghostly International last revived its ambient-leaning “SMM” imprint, so the sad sack in all of us rejoiced when we heard about the label’s new Context series recently. Set to drop on March 1, it’s “a hand-picked selection of some of the world’s finest musicians…who traffic in SMM’s slow-moving, texture-focused compositions, simple in instrumentation, but infinitely complex in execution.”
What this means for the rest of us is an immaculately curated compilation of drone, ambient and neo-classical pieces from Jacaszek, Leyland Kirby, Ghostly alum Rafael Anton Irisarri (a.k.a. The Sight Below), and a host of other minor-keyed maestros who bring a tear to our eyes on a regular basis. Here’s the full tracklisting, cover art, and two streaming songs…
