2011 IN REVIEW: Our Art Director’s Top 10 Albums, From Juicy J to Nicolas Jaar

Black Lips live @ The Shank in Brooklyn

Since self-titled revolves around three very different people, we thought we’d share individual year-end lists from each of our editors, starting with the guy responsible for making our magazine look much more expensive than it is: senior editor/art director Aaron Richter

We’ll always have a soft spot in our hearts for Black Lips. Why, it seems like yesterday when we first saw them make out with each other and their Nugget-y guitars, and put those rotten Georgia peaches on the debut issue of a little digital magazine called self-titled. Now they’re working with people like Mark Ronson, the same producer/overpaid DJ who managed to make sense of Amy Winehouse for an entire album? Indeed. And here is their story—the story of Arabia Mountain, as told by singer/guitarist Cole Alexander…

SXSW Shots By The Black Lips, Toro Y Moi & the Megaphonic Thrift

The Black Lips & Gwar

Since most SXSW packages—ours included—rely on a similar realm of live photos and party previews, self-titled thought we’d do something a little different this year: drop disposable cameras in the hands of our favorite bands, along with a few simple instructions:

1. Don’t worry about capturing shows. ‘Professional photographers’ already have them covered.
2. The more candid and random the roll, the better.
3. Don’t forget a dick shot, okay?

While a few cameras went missing, just about everyone delivered the goods, including one artist who took No. 3 literally and shall remain nameless…

VIDEO: Watch Bradford Cox and Cole Alexander Perform As Ghetto Cross At Surprise Lonnie Holley Show In Atlanta

Via TheBlueIndian.com:

Last night was a classic case of bad news/good news. The bad news was that Wye Oak had to cancel their show with Lower Dens at The Earl in Atlanta. The good news was that Lower Dens were still playing… with Deerhunter filling the headliner spot. The surprises didn’t end there either.

Scribbled in chalk on the board outside the venue was an opening act called “Lonnie Holley featuring Ghetto Cross.” That turned out to be famed African American visual artist and educator Lonnie Holley accompanied by Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) and Cole Alexander (Black Lips). The trio’s set was a wonderful improv jam session consisting of three 15-20 minute-long songs. Cox moved between his guitar & pedals to the drums, Alexander pounded away on his bass, and Holley delivered steady stream-of-consciousness lyrics as he played the keyboard. It was Holley’s passionate, emotional delivery that made it work – no one could take their eyes off of him.

Check out a couple clips from the show after the jump…

VIDEO: In the Studio With The Black Lips and Mark Ronson

You read that headline right. The Black Lips have decided to link up with Mark Ronson for their seventh record. Studio footage can be found at the Creators Project site, but we also uncovered two clips from Ronson’s East Village Radio show where the Lips cover the Velvet Underground and Charles Manson. Check ‘em out below, along with our Black Lips cover story from the very first issue of self-titled

1MM: Photos of Cerebral Ballzy & The Black Lips @ The Shank

Photos by Andrew Parks

So what if “M.I.A.,” “O Katrina!” and “Dirty Hands” were the only Black Lips songs that survived the Shank’s murky mix on Saturday? Considering the way people rushed the stage from the start, the point of JellyNYC’s “secret show” was quite simple—to shotgun beer and slam into 18-year-old kids who looked like they’d just seen Black Flag for the first time. (You can blame Cerebral Ballzy and an all-ages bill for that one.)

Anyway, here’s what survived the wreckage as we stood on stage and tried to keep one of the band’s speakers from crushing a couple fans…
