LISTENING STATION: From French Black Metal to Black Sabbath, Buzz Saw-Shaped 12′s to Blue 45′s, Tombs Has a Hell of a Record Collection

Photos by Aaron Richter

While we certainly appreciate when a band takes a self-titled assignment seriously, we had no idea what we were in for when we asked Tombs to share the prized platters in their respective record collections. All three members—frontman Mike Hill, drummer Andrew Hernandez and bassist Carson Daniel James—responded with some of the rarest 12′s and 45′s we’ve seen in years. Hell, we still don’t even know what a few of them are after scouring the ‘net for more details, but we are intrigued enough to keep looking. And give Hirilorn a spin. Man, they sound like they’d be rad.

Anyway, for more on Tombs, check out our BUY IT-endorsed review of their Relapse debut here and a FEED THE ANGER report from the frontlines of a Tombs show here.

Pelican Sign to Southern Lord, Reveal Tour With Tombs, Wolves in the Throne Room

In a move that’s left the crossover metal scene—okay, maybe just us—wondering about a potential turf war, Southern Lord has snagged Pelican for their fourth full-length and a soon-to-be-completed EP. That means the Chicago-based quartet  finally left their longtime label, Hydra Head. In some ways, the deal makes perfect sense (both imprints appeal to the curious hipster market; Pelican’s drummer, Larry Herweg, used to play in Lair of the Minotaur, another Southern Lord band), but it seems odd that one of Hydra Head’s flagship artists flew the coop just a year after shooting this video with their owner, a certain “Juan Perez.”

FEED THE ANGER: Tombs @ Union Pool, 2.4.09

Words and Photos by Aaron Richter

Whenever I catch a show at Union Pool, I can’t help but wish an unhinged musician would bash in a few of the lights that line the stage’s frame, like Paige or Townsend would have done. Glowing a faint, delicate, nearly-dead yellow, the bulbs are just begging to be crushed, and as the Brooklyn metal trio Tombs unleashed a hefty slug of darkness, I’m certain I glimpsed bassist Carson Daniel James smashing in a couple of those suckers. Badass!

Surrounded by a light but full, subdued crowd, I crouched in the front for a jaw-dropping vantage point and humped the lip of the stage as the band powered through songs such as “Gossamer” and “Golden Eyes.” On record, the tracks yield layered intricacies–probably why the group often gets tagged with My Bloody Valentine comparisons. But live, everything became much more direct and guttural. Rather than slipping beneath headphones to indulge whatever studio tinkery these guys have going on, you’re left to witness the raw trio: fast-picking Mike Hill howling with an earthy, worn bellow, Andrew Hernandez driving time with uncanny precision and James donning the role of stage intimidator. The show offered containment that never felt restrained or stifled.

FLOOR PUNCH: The View From the Pit of Kylesa’s First Basement Show in Forever

[Photos by Andrew Parks; slideshow available here]

Token heckler statement: “Why don’t you play some more Drive Like Jehu covers, you emo pussies!”

To be clear, Tournament are not weak-willed descendants of Dashboard Confessional. Unfortunately, they’re also not Kylesa, the sludge-slinging, crust-punk-catering Savannah band that made a rare back-to-basics appearance in the Charleston‘s basement last night. Yes, basement—the kind of overstuffed spot that encourages pinball-like mosh pits and holds 100 people, tops.

Needless to say, self-titled happily revisited our Buffalo hardcore roots as we fired off shots from the floor and dodged quite a few sucker punches. Tournament was tight, Tombs was fierce (as in, really really heavy, not the Christian Siriano definition), and Kylesa was incredible.

Be sure to watch our daily site and upcoming digital issues for more from Tombs and Kylesa, as both bands are about to release serious Top 10 contenders for extreme music aficiandos. (Tombs is prepping their Relapse debut for a February 17 release, and Kylesa just completed their Static Tensions LP for a March 17 street date. Both are highly recommended.)

Now, onto the windmills and drop kicks …
