Sandwell District Shutters Its Doors, Offers New Mix

Sandwell District, one of our favorite underground techno collectives of the past five years, has decided to stop releasing new records, sharing the following statement on their Tumblr:

Beginning the 31st of December, 2011, regular audio communications from Sandwell District will cease. All vinyl artifacts have been decommissioned. There is a possibility of future, albeit irregular, print communications with audio accompaniment. However, details—and indeed content—is uncertain at this moment in time. The Sandwell experiment will exist through live actions—which will continue to expand into new sonic territory—in addition to audio/print installations as previously witnessed in New York, Los Angeles, Gdansk, Bialystok, Berlin and London.

Stasis is death.

See you on the other side.

Lest anyone think Sandwell District won’t live up to their “stasis is death” promise, one of the group’s members has already posted a killer mix that may or may not hint at their next creative move, including s/t-approved cuts from John Maus, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin and Death In June. Grab it below…

2011 IN REVIEW: HTRK, ‘Work (work, work)’

Like most serious music fans, self-titled spends most days devouring records across hard drives, streaming services and our trusty office turntable. That’s why we’re devoting the next month to deconstructing LPs we loved from throughout the year. Here’s one of them, complete with the entire album streaming…

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 069: An Exclusive Mix By … HTRK

(Photo: Ren Rox; L to R: Jonnine Standish, Sean Stewart, Nigel Yang)

When self-titled first asked HTRK to lend one of their carefully curated mixes to our Needle Exchange series, we expected shades of the black-lit sound that the Australian duo first sculpted with bassist Sean Stewart in 2003. Guitarist/programmer Nigel Yang and frontwoman Jonnine Standish went several steps further, however, splicing bits of James Brown, Chris Carter and more with some of the skeletal bedroom recordings Stewart made before taking his own life in March of last year. Here’s a brief explanation from the trio’s surviving members:

This mix features ‘field’ recordings that Sean (R.I.P.) made in his Berlin bedroom in 2009. It’s 4am and he can’t sleep. Trace our steps as we leave Sean’s room for other rooms.

Have a listen below, and be sure to look out for a track-by-track breakdown of HTRK’s new album, Work (work, work), in our next issue, which drops in the coming month…

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 055: An Exclusive Mix By … Svarte Greiner

Words & Mix by Erik Skodvin of Deaf Center/Svarte Greiner

Although initially asked to do a dark ambient mix, I feel there’s way too much interesting music
I want to share to narrow it down that much. I guess “Entrance Shot” is still a fairly dark mix, but I tried adding some different things I’ve really liked lately, with a couple of older additions.

And since I’ve changed Miasmah‘s release schedule around quite a bit since last year, it’s a good chance to preview some of the really great upcoming stuff we have in the first half of the year. First, there’s the recently released Juv album—recorded between 1996-98 and left unfinished for 14 years ’cause of personal conflict. Are [Mokkelbost] started going through the duo’s DATs last year and found out there was so much good material in there for it to finally get a release. On top of that, I have albums by two very unique Belgian artists who happen to play in the same live show together (mainly the Kreng/Abattoir Férme show). I’m very excited about these, which are both very hard to describe (Kaboom Karavan, Kreng).

I also had the pleasure of seeing live peformances by Aun (Montreal) and Andy Moor & Yannis Kyriakides (Rome) last year while on tour, which led to my discovery of their amazing music. Finally, I want to mention hearing Luciano Cilio while in a record shop in Oslo about 3-4 years ago. Luciano died at age 33 (1984) after completing the album this track is from, which ended up beeing his only recorded release, later reissued on Die Schachtel in 2004. Big recommendation!
