Well, it’s finally here—the self-titled debut album from Light Asylum, available to stream below, and in your friendly neighborhood record shop next Tuesday…

Remember Kemado Records? Yep, us neither. That’s because Mexican Summer—and to a lesser extent, the Ford & Lopatin-curated Software Label—has gradually eclipsed its sister label in its sheer volume of releases, records that celebrate artists outside of the psych-rock/’hipster-metal’ corner Kemado painted itself into. (Why, just this week Kemado put out a Pink Floyd-y LP called Center of the Sun.)
This change couldn’t be more apparent in Mexican Summer’s spring release schedule, a progression of eagerly anticipated LPs from the likes of Light Asylum, Peaking Lights and Best Coast. Have a listen to new and old tracks from the Brooklyn imprint in the hefty 15-track sampler below…

Now that their long-awaited debut album’s a little over a month away, Light Asylum have shared a new song called “IPC.” Not to be confused with I-C-P, it’s a keyboard-driven call to arms that rides its gleaming, razor-edged riffs for five minutes before ending with a caustic call-and-response chorus from Shannon Funchess. Having seen the song performed live at South by Southwest, we can safely say its a set standout that’s actually not from the EP they’ve been pushing for the past couple years.
Grab it below, alongside the Brooklyn duo’s upcoming tour dates…
Now if only Light Asylum would finish their long-delayed debut album…

Since we’ve already shared Anika‘s non-musical influences and debated modern art with her at MoMa, self-titled thought we’d shift to another side of the singer’s psyche—the part that maintains a carefully curated record crate and occasionally emerges at random DJ gigs. Here’s an exclusive live vinyl mix, presented as part of our Needle Exchange series. Details on Anika’s first proper U.S. tour—beginning tonight at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York—are available at Stones Throw’s site…
When the s/t office first heard about Mexican Summer‘s Light Asylum signing, we thought, ‘Oh great, our favorite local act is finally going to finish their debut album.’ Little did we know that it’s not on tap until next year. Guess they’re taking their time in hopes of getting things right. Or maybe they’re just waiting for a week in the studio with a certain unemployed frontman/big fan. At any rate, the following EP—the long-awaited proper pressing of their DIY demo, In Tension (available now on iTunes, and in late June as a limited 12”)—will have to do for now…
Welcome to the song that’s stopped us in our tracks every . . . single . . . time we’ve seen Light Asylum. Now if only they’d release a proper LP already.
ArpLine won’t be releasing their debut album—the Chris Coady-produced (see also: Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) Travel Book—until early next year, but that didn’t stop us from steering frontman Sam Tyndall away from the studio for a special mix. This one’s a tricky summer tape, as it includes dollops of Italo disco (Kano, Mr. Flagio) and choice cuts from DOM, the Chameleons, Light Asylum and Sparks. If that isn’t enough of a glimpse into what may or may not be influencing ArpLine’s own LP, Tyndall also snuck an exclusive song into his set (the Eno/Colin Newman/Grauzone-sampling “Ishvara”).
The Brooklyn band sets the stage for Morning Teleportation at Mercury Lounge next Wednesday. And if that show’s a little too late for you, they have a JellyNYC “Block Party” appearance on deck as well: Sunday, August 1, with details TBA.
