Kevin Martin Reveals Guest List For the Next Bug Album, From Grouper and Gonjasufi To His Old Buddy Justin Broadrick

Kevin Martin has revealed more details about his long-awaited fourth album as the Bug. Fresh off a session with Gonjasufi, he told his Twitter followers, “Gonja’s voice is like a homesick alien’s heading for the stars…He is a brother from another planet.”

He continued, calling the record a “dream come true” and promising it sometime this year, including sample-driven duets with Daddy Freddy, Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Death Grips, Grouper and Martin’s longtime GOD/Ice/Techno Animal collaborator, Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh.

Check out a lengthy interview with Martin from last summer here, and his last duet with Broadrick, the Bug single “Catch a Fire” (featuring King Midas Sound‘s Kiki Hitomi) below…

THE SELF-TITLED INTERVIEW: The Bug

(King Midas Sound, L to R: Kiki Hitomi, George Robinson, Kevin Martin)

Words by Andrew Parks

If self-titled had to make a short list of our favorite living producers, Kevin Martin would rank right up near the top, in the spot most people reserve for the Kanye Wests and Aphex Twins of the world. Whether we’re talking about his early post-apocalyptic projects with Justin Broadrick (Techno Animal, Ice, GOD) or the Dick-ish—as in Philip K.—dub of the Bug, Martin has proved to be one of the bravest beat makers in the business.

This is especially true of his current trio King Midas Sound, an ever-evolving entity that’s gone from the dread-chased cuts of Waiting For You to the road-seasoned reinterpretations/remixes of this fall’s Without You collection, which includes contributions from Gang Gang Dance, Mala, Hype Williams and many more. Check out an exclusive video premiere from the eagerly awaited record below, along with an extensive, exclusive talk with Martin about everything from his undying love of Jamaican music to the chances of us hearing another record from his brain trust with Broadrick…

From Joker to Corrupted, King Midas Sound Share Their Favorite Poets, Artists & Producers

(L to R: Kevin Martin, Roger Robinson, Kiki)

Like his last public appearance as the Bug (2008′s speaker-pummeling London Zoo LP), Kevin Martin‘s King Midas Sound project is rooted in dub reggae and subterranean electronic music. There’s one key difference between the two, though: the Bug is dancehall gone heavy-metal and KMS is everything we wish Massive Attack were in 2009: sinister and strangely sexy, with a debut album (Waiting For You…, out now on Hyperdub) that’s quickly becoming one of our favorite late fall listens. That’s because it unfolds like a tour of London’s neon-lit back alleys. Or at the very least, a walk through Central Park at midnight, as snow starts to fall and the freshly-frozen ground crunches and caves in beneath your boots.

Since King Midas Sound is such a group effort (Martin’s ominous soundscapes paired with the falsetto-infused poetry of Roger Robinson and the melancholic melodies of Kiki), we asked each of its members to talk about five rising artists/producers/spoken word performers in their respective fields. Here’s what they had to say…
