Former Isis Members and Deftones Frontman Chino Moreno Reveal New Palms Project, Ready Debut Album For 2012 Release

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno

Well this is unexpected: three former ISIS members (Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer, Jeff Caxide) have announced a new project with Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno. Going by the name of Palms, the quartet plans on releasing their debut record later this year. This despite reports that the Deftones will unveil their next album this year as well.

“Clifford, Jeff and I started Palms a little over a year ago out of a desire to continue making music together after ISIS ended,” Harris said in a statement. “Chino joined shortly after and our sound took shape from there. We’ve worked really hard on this first release and are excited for people to hear it. It’s nice to be back behind the drum kit, and with this line up.”

“Being a huge ISIS fan I’ve always dug the moods these dudes convey with their sound,” added Moreno. “I am excited to combine my sense of creativity with theirs, and to have fun doing so.”

Look out for Palms’ debut LP through Mike Patton’s Ipecac imprint, with more details to come. For a complete guide to ISIS’ back catalog, check out Aaron Turner’s Primer here, and Moreno’s summer tour plans with the Deftones and System of a Down below…

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 086: An Exclusive Mix By … Aaron Turner

Photo: Faith Coloccia

Here’s a short list of the projects Aaron Turner has on tap this year: a new Jodis album with 1/2 of Khanate; LPs that pair Mamiffer with Daniel Menche, Circle, and Locrian; co-signed releases from SIGE Records; and a “secret record coming out in the spring that will likely be the ‘biggest’ of the bunch.”

So yeah, ISIS’ 2010 split suddenly makes a lot of sense. As does the recent release of Turner’s first solo record in nearly a decade: House of Low Culture’s Poisoned Soil LP, a highly experimental listen that’s explored in an exclusive mixtape below…

Taiga Releases Aaron Turner’s First Solo Album In Forever

We realize the economy’s wrecked and all, but if you’re going to buy one post-Isis retirement plan this year, make it Aaron Turner’s first proper House of Low Culture LP since 2003. Always a magnet for prime guest players—Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’ Malley and Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s Jay Randall both contributed to past HOLC releases—Turner welcomes two main collaborators on Poisoned Soil, his wife/Mammifer bandmate Faith Coloccia and percussionist B.R.A.D (Asva, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Burning Witch).

We haven’t heard the whole thing yet, but we did grab one of 100 limited “lead paint” pressings through Taiga here. You can also sample an excerpt of a song via the A.V. Club below…

LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Mammifer/House of Low Culture/Merzbow, ‘Lou Lou…In Tokyo’ Double LP

The Artist/Album: Mammifer/House of Low Culture/Merzbow, Lou Lou…In Tokyo (SIGE, 2011)

The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: Considering how active Aaron Turner’s been since Isis suddenly disbanded last summer, one thing’s clear: dude’s found quite a muse in Mamiffer frontwoman Faith Coloccia. How else could one explain the Robert Pollard-like procession of releases that have been rolling off the assembly line of the pair’s relatively new SIGE Records imprint, from micro-lot cassettes to this limited, elegantly designed live album? Lou Lou‘s one-night-only set starts off with relatively sedate renditions of Coloccia’s back catalog, then eases into a tense side-long collaboration with Boris drummer Atsuo and the almighty Merzbow—one that’s patient enough to make its climatic blend of ambient noise and monk-like chants truly count.

1MM: A Few Photos From Isis’ Farewell Show In Brooklyn

Photos by Andrew Parks

Everything you need to know about Isis‘ impact on underground metal was already explained in our extensive feature with frontman Aaron Turner, so we’ll just say this: self-titled have seen the band many, many times and last night’s Music Hall of Williamsburg show was one of their best sets yet—a LOUD, lumbering overview of the 13-year-old catalog that’ll come to a fitting end with a Melvins split next month. Here’s some photographic evidence of what very well may be their last Brooklyn appearance…at least until the inevitable Oceanic-era reunion run.

PRIMER: Aaron Turner Revisits Isis’ Entire Catalog

As sad as we are to see Isis go, the band’s imminent breakup—set to commence after their current tour—isn’t the least bit surprising. A quick scan of Decibel‘s final Isis cover story (written by self-titled contributor J. Bennett) all but confirmed it five months ago, with each of the members interviewed in their own abodes and hinting at other projects on the horizon. Frontman Aaron Turner, for one, has been busy trying to balance way too many other commitments for a while now, from art direction gigs and the day-to-day operations of his label Hydra Head Records to such part-time collaborations as Jodis, Greymachine and Mamiffer.

Well, part-time in the past, at least. As you’re about to see, Turner has a stack of post-Isis records on tap, but that’s not to say he isn’t incredibly proud of Isis’ slow-but-steady evolution over the past decade. In the following exclusive—and exhaustive—feature, Turner takes us on a tour of the band’s entire catalog, including their rare early recordings and the one record he’s still disappointed by. As you read, be sure to cue up one of their final singles, “20 Minutes/40 Years.”

PEEP SHOW: Toast the End of Isis With Some of Their Best Videos

ISIS live at Irving Plaza

ISIS surprised their fans with a sudden press release last night, declaring next month’s Melvins tour their last. The statement is rather lengthy, so here’s the basic breakdown:

In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close. We’ve seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure ISIS would never fall victim to that syndrome. We’ve had a much longer run than we ever expected we would and accomplished a great deal more than we ever imagined possible…In more immediate and practical terms the tour we are about to embark upon is indeed our last. We are hoping that these final live rituals can help us bring a close to the life of this band in a celebratory and reverent way, and also provide us with a chance to say goodbye to many of those that have supported us over the years. While there is a measure of sadness that comes with the passing of this band, we hope that the final days can be joyous ones during which any and all that wish to come and join us will do so.

The band then alluded to one last EP and more entries in their ongoing series of live recordings and DVDs. Not to mention side projects (Mammifer, MGR, Red Sparowes) that may or may not become fulltime gigs in the near future.

As for what ISIS’ label thinks about this, Mike Patton and Greg Werckman of Ipecac Records said, “It has been a complete honor to be a part of the ISIS team. ISIS is a major part of our label’s foundation. Those five talented guys are our friends and we look forward to see and hear what they each do in the future.”

Check out all of ISIS’ official videos, a special performance with Tim Hecker, and some official live clips from Paris after the jump…

1MM: Isis Lead Patient Irving Plaza Crowd Into the Great Beyond, Even the Ones Who Weren’t Stoned

Isis don’t like to be photographed. This much we know from the band’s decade-plus existence, hence the bathed-in-blue and draped-in-sickly-green lighting of their Irving Plaza set last night.

With that said, Isis’ music screams for itself, mimicking the ebb and flow of a Mogwai show while tossing numerous curveballs into the mix, including the spaced-out synths of Bryant Clifford Meyer, the booming beardo vocals and trash compactor chords of Aaron Turner, and the spindly bass lines of Jeff Caxide.  We’ve seen the greatest band on Mike Patton’s label a good six times or so, including a showcase-stealing performance at SXSW a couple years back, and you know what? They keep getting better, as Isis’ five distinct players refine their truly oceanic sound right into the great beyond.

We’ll have a feature about Turner’s acclaimed art portfolio in our issue later this month. For now, some more photos…

ISIS Wrap Up New Record With Guest Spots From Tool Guitarist

While we had no idea they were even working on a new record, ISIS has put the finishing touches on Wavering Radiant, their first full-length since 2006′s In the Absence of Truth. Due out May 5 through Ipecac (a limited vinyl pressing is also set for April 21), the disc features the production of Joe Baressi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool) and a pair of appearances by Tool guitarist Adam Jones. Tool’s bassist, Justin Chancellor, provided some low-end action on ISIS’ “Altered Course” oddesey way back in 2004.

Check out an actual ISIS video—from the “In Fiction” single—after the jump …
