Jacaszek On … Positive Anxiety, Polish Weather & Metaphysical Poetry

Photo: Basia Jacaszek

Recording Under the Influence is a recurring self-titled feature where we ask artists to ignore their musical inspirations for a minute and share what really went into the making of a particular record. Under the microscope this week: Jacaszek, an old neo-classical favorite who recently graced us with the carefully orchestrated—and delicately paced—doom and gloom of Glimmer (available now through Ghostly International)…

Ghostly Curates ‘Context’ Compilation, Featuring Aidan Baker, Leyland Kirby & Nine More Artists That Make Us Cry In Public

A self-portrait of Peter Broderick

It’s been a while since Ghostly International last revived its ambient-leaning “SMM” imprint, so the sad sack in all of us rejoiced when we heard about the label’s new Context series recently. Set to drop on March 1, it’s “a hand-picked selection of some of the world’s finest musicians…who traffic in SMM’s slow-moving, texture-focused compositions, simple in instrumentation, but infinitely complex in execution.”

It’s more or less the feeling one imbues as you’re shifting through these strange, semi-conscious motions, staring aimlessly out the window for of the car for hours—often days—at a time. I can’t quite explain it, so I’ll just let the ensuing combination of words and music try to do justice to the experience.

“Today his mind is perplexed and he looks up into the perfect cloudless empty blue and wonders what all the bruiting and furor is below, what all the yelling, the buildings, the humanity, the concern—“Maybe there’s nothing at all,” he divines in his lucid pureness—“Just like the smoke that comes out of Papa’s pipe”— “The pictures the smoke makes”— “All I gotta do is close my eyes and it all goes away”— “There is no earth— look at the perfect sky, it says nothing”. — Jack Kerouac
