LISTEN: Mark McGuire, “In Search of the Miraculous”

Mark McGuire - 'Along the Way' Well this is exactly what we needed after last night’s noise fest: a meditative solo number from Mark McGuire, echoing his Emeralds work in its extraterrestrial guitar tones but otherwise carving out a new corner in his immense back catalog. As suggested by the sunset on your left, that’d be a soul-searching survey of synthetic strings, gleaming power chords and weightless, buried lyrics like “All I know for sure, is there must be something more.”

Keep your head up, dude. Look out for McGuire’s next LP, Along the Way, on the Japanese imprint Inpartment Inc.

LISTEN: Mark McGuire, “The Instinct (Extended 12” Version)”

Mark McGuire - 'The Instinct' Emeralds fans who are still mourning their seemingly sudden breakup already have a new Mark McGuire solo album to look forward to. Due out later this year, The Journey Towards Being will be prefaced by a proper 12” through New Images Ltd. soon.

Check out a mind-expanding mix of “The Instinct” featuring McGuire on guitar, bass, synths and (programmed) drums below, and a lengthy interview from last year that addresses his move to Portland, why it took Emeralds so long to record their final release and more here.

THE SELF-TITLED INTERVIEW: Mark McGuire of Emeralds

Mark McGuire

Interview by Andrew Parks

We’ve encountered two versions of Mark McGuire in the past year: the shy guy who barely said a word during the interview we moderated between his Kraut-rock-y band Emeralds and legendary film composer Alan Howarth, and the Cleveland native who attacks our stack of email questions like a SoCal surfer or Sean Penn’s bong-huffing character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Neither of which say as much about McGuire’s personality as his music, a steady stream of deeply moving records that have cemented his role as one of the underground’s most expressive guitarists.

In the following exclusive interview—timed to his two appearances at Unsound this week—McGuire discusses his past, present and future at length, including the roots of his Inner Tube records with Spencer Clark, how a recent move to Portland has impacted his songwriting, and when we can expect the next proper Emeralds record…

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 097: An Exclusive Mix By … Mark McGuire

(L to R: Mark McGuire and Spencer Clark of Inner Tube)

Inspired by the surfer dude spirit of his new Inner Tube project (featuring Spencer Clark of the Skaters), we asked Emeralds guitarist Mark McGuire to share an exclusive summertime mix under his DJ Road Chief guise. He fired back a two-hour tape that includes “Beach Blanket” edits, experimental flourishes (Cindytalk, Coil, Suzanne Ciani) and enough yacht rock to make you feel like you’re in Duran Duran’s “Rio” video.

Presenting “Road Chief’s Sun Burnt Reef Rash Beach Bash 2K12” mix—the “Unsound SPF 50+ Edition,” in tribute to the two shows McGuire is playing at the New York festival this week. For more info about all of the above, as well as McGuire’s past work and upcoming projects, be sure to check back on our site later today for an interview that’s about as long as his mixtape…
