LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Cat’s Eyes, ‘Cat’s Eyes’

The Artist/Album: Cat’s Eyes, Cat’s Eyes (Downtown, 2011)

A Short Review: If you can make it past the slightly corny status of its first couple heart-on-sleeve songs, the self-titled debut of Cat’s Eyes proves to be a promising Lee & Nancy session from Horrors frontman Faris Badwan and his lady friend Rachel Zeffira. The classically trained opera singer seizes every moment she’s given, letting her lithe melodies float atop lots of “Be My Baby” beats and a string-and-horn-heavy backdrop that reminds us of the Roaring Twenties and golden age film scores. A side project worth exploring no matter how you cut it.

Grinderman Announces Remix Record, Shares Selections From Factory Floor, Andrew Weatherall, Nick Zinner and More

[Pitchfork] Now that Grinderman‘s hung up their guitars in favor of future Bad Seeds releases, the Nick Cave side project has announced a collection of remixes, reinterpretations and collaborations from their second record. Due out March 13th through Anti-, Grinderman 2 RMX features such seemingly random contributors as Robert Fripp, Josh Homme, Cat’s Eyes and Matt Berninger.

2011 IN REVIEW: The Horrors, ‘Skying’

Photo: Neil Krug

Like most serious music fans, self-titled spends most days devouring records across hard drives, streaming services and our trusty office turntable. That’s why we’re devoting the next month to deconstructing LPs we loved from throughout the year. Here’s one of them…

The Artist & Their Latest Release: The Horrors, Skying (XL, 2011)

The Set In a Few Sentences: The last time we saw the Horrors, they were still straddling the diametrically opposed realms of art rock and pure camp; irrefutably caught in an identity crisis that might as well have been co-sponsored by the NME. Which was really frustrating to witness given how grown up the group’s second album (2009′s Primary Colours) sounded on the first, fifth, and fiftieth listen. (Unlike most of the music that passes through self-titled‘s office—records that don’t remain in rotation for more than a week—we still listen to it regularly two years later.)

The Horrors’ Frontman Unveils Cat’s Eyes Project At the Vatican

As first reported on Pitchfork, Faris Badwan of the Horrors recently played a special Cat’s Eyes set at the St. Peter’s Basilica.  The church gig was arranged by Badwan’s new bandmate, opera singer/multi-instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira. She’s performed in the space before, and somehow convinced them to let the duo serenade the afternoon mass crowd and “seven high-ranking cardinals.” Unlike his early days with the Horrors—we once saw him toss a trash can at a SXSW crowd—Badwan behaved himself, guiding the proceedings with a subtle organ score and some not-so-merry melodies.

Cat’s Eyes will release their debut Broken Glass EP on May 3 through Cooperative Music/Downtown. You can download one of their songs (“Not a Friend”) here and watch their sacred rendition of “I Knew It Was Over” after the jump…

THE SELF-TITLED INTERVIEW: Geoff Barrow of Portishead & BEAK>

BEAK> (L to R: Matt Williams, Billy Fuller, Geoff Barrow)

As if being friends with Banksky, running an underground record label (Invada), and producing/playing in Portishead isn’t exciting enough, Geoff Barrow has also spent the past year sharpening the sonic teeth of his new band BEAK>. Rounding out by Robert Plant’s recent bassist (Billy Fuller, also of Invada’s first-ever signing, Fuzz Against Junk) and Matt Williams (Team Brick), the power trio formed in early 2009 and tracked their self-titled debut at their first rehearsals. Slapdash start aside, the songs are the sound of three Bristol vets who are on some sort of spiritual plane together—right alongside everything from the classic Kraut-rock of Can to stoner-metal standards like Sunn O))) and Sleep.

It’s music you lose your mind to, in other words—an even weirder version of Barrow’s creative vision than the last Portishead record, if you can believe that. In the following interview, Barrow discusses everything from his favorite Madlib record to why the Horrors didn’t really need his help after all. BEAK> will be making a couple rare East Coast appearances this weekend, including a stop at Bowery Ballroom on Friday and a set at the upstate edition of All Tomorrow’s Parties on Saturday.
