Hot on the heels of The Bug’s all-too-brief North American tour comes news that Kevin Martin’s other main project—the tortured dub trio King Midas Sound—has signed to Ninja Tune and will release a new 12” single (“Aroo”) on Record Store Day, with plans in place for a proper LP later this year. The group will also perform live at London’s Rough Trade East shop on April 20th.

SXSW 2013 SPOTLIGHT: Panache Booking Showcase @ Hotel Vegas

John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

The most surprising development at this year’s South by Southwest festival had more to do with its countless venues than the artists themselves. Continuing a trend that began with the closing of Emo’s and FADER moving its massive showcase further down 5th Street, 2013 was the first time we spent far more time on the food truck-dotted streets of Austin’s East Side than the city’s fabled stretch of 6th Street. And not just unofficial, Corporate America-cosigned extravaganzas like Converse and Thrasher’s rock solid four-day stint at Scoot Inn; from Burger’s day-long takeover of Hotel Vegas’ four stages to Boiler Room’s wildly ambitious debut at 1100 Warehouse, many promoters seemed to suddenly downgrade the cool factor of playing in the heart of downtown. After all, where would you rather be caught Tweeting: in front of a wall of Doritos and once-fearsome/fearless MCs like Ice Cube and Public Enemy (“Fight the Power,” presented to you by Cool Ranch Tacos!), or a couple rows of Goner fans away from King Tuff and Thee Oh Sees?

The answer was certainly clear at Friday night’s Panache showcase, which served as a not-so-gentle reminder of how the booking agency’s tastes fall right in line with ours. Here are photos of a few standouts from a night that was full of ‘em, including the nihilistic noise of Destruction Unit, the gap-toothed grooves of Mac DeMarco and the pressurized beat science of The Bug, who hammered the East vs. West divide home by performing on a much better sound system than the muted mess he was forced to face the night before…

Sample the First 7-Inch From The Bug’s New Acid Ragga Label

The Bug - 'Rise Up/Can't Take This No More' 7-inch

As we first reported way back in April, The Bug is set to launch a new 7-inch label on August 27. Available for pre-order here, it features a rough and ready Daddy Freddy reunion on the A-side (“Can’t Take This No More”) and an Inga Copeland collab on the flip (“Rise Up”) that makes a decent case for her breaking away from Hype Williams for a hot minute. Check out edits of both tracks down below…

The Bug Announces 7-Inch Series and New ‘Angels & Devils’ Album Featuring Death Grips, Grouper, Justin Broadrick & More

[Clash Music] Ninja Tune has revealed more details about Kevin Martin’s next round of releases as the Bug. First up:  a series of 7-inches through Martin’s new Acid Ragga imprint, starting with “Can’t Take This No More”/”Rise Up,” which features Daddy Freddy on the A-side and Inga Copeland of Hype Williams infamy on the flip.

Kevin Martin Reveals Guest List For the Next Bug Album, From Grouper and Gonjasufi To His Old Buddy Justin Broadrick

Kevin Martin has revealed more details about his long-awaited fourth album as the Bug. Fresh off a session with Gonjasufi, he told his Twitter followers, “Gonja’s voice is like a homesick alien’s heading for the stars…He is a brother from another planet.”

He continued, calling the record a “dream come true” and promising it sometime this year, including sample-driven duets with Daddy Freddy, Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Death Grips, Grouper and Martin’s longtime GOD/Ice/Techno Animal collaborator, Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh.

Check out a lengthy interview with Martin from last summer here, and his last duet with Broadrick, the Bug single “Catch a Fire” (featuring King Midas Sound‘s Kiki Hitomi) below…

THE SELF-TITLED INTERVIEW: The Bug

(King Midas Sound, L to R: Kiki Hitomi, George Robinson, Kevin Martin)

Words by Andrew Parks

If self-titled had to make a short list of our favorite living producers, Kevin Martin would rank right up near the top, in the spot most people reserve for the Kanye Wests and Aphex Twins of the world. Whether we’re talking about his early post-apocalyptic projects with Justin Broadrick (Techno Animal, Ice, GOD) or the Dick-ish—as in Philip K.—dub of the Bug, Martin has proved to be one of the bravest beat makers in the business.

This is especially true of his current trio King Midas Sound, an ever-evolving entity that’s gone from the dread-chased cuts of Waiting For You to the road-seasoned reinterpretations/remixes of this fall’s Without You collection, which includes contributions from Gang Gang Dance, Mala, Hype Williams and many more. Check out an exclusive video premiere from the eagerly awaited record below, along with an extensive, exclusive talk with Martin about everything from his undying love of Jamaican music to the chances of us hearing another record from his brain trust with Broadrick…

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Ford & Lopatin, “Emergency Room”

“Emergency Room” will be available on a limited “X-ray picture disc” April 26th, along with remixes by Gavin Russom and the Bug. Software/Mexican Summer will follow it up with the first Ford & Lopatin full-length on June 7th.

Judging by their set alongside the album’s mixer (Prefuse 73) a few weeks ago, the thing’s going to be poppy as hell, the next logical step in Daniel Lopatin’s (Oneohtrix Point Never, Infinity Window) evolution from the noise scene to Betamax beats and laser-guided synth lines. We also hear that Autre Ne Veut—the How To Dress Well-like singer who opened up our 0PN release party last year—contributed some guest vocals (that might be him on this song, actually), so you can expect some twisted R&B vibes as well. For now, grab “Emergency Room” below, along with tour dates and a Channel Pressure tracklisting…
